JOYEUX MUSIC INTERNATIONAL (JMI) Festival and Competition for Pianists 2020 Piano solo, Duet and Two-pianos categories
The JMI Competition - Requirements and Regulations
1. ELIGIBILITY The competition is opened to pianists of all ages and all nationalities are welcome to participate.
2. CATEGORIES The competition consists of Piano solo, Piano duet and Two-piano categories in different age groups. Applicants who sign up for the competition only; but not the festival and masterclasses are subjected to submit a preliminary video for screening. Successful applicants will be informed to proceed to the next stage of the competition. All participants in the Solo categories must perform all works from memory.
The requirements for Piano Solo, Piano Duet or 2-piano Duos are as follows:
Junior Solo or Duet:
till 10 years old (Participants born after 1 June 2010)
Video screening: ONE work of 3 to 5 mins.
Final Stage: ONE or more works of 5 to 8 mins
Intermediate Solo or Duet
till 14 years old (Participants born after 1 June 2006)
Video screening: ONE work of 4 to 6 mins
Final Stage: ONE of more works of 6 to 10 mins
Advanced Solo
till 18 years old (Participants born after 1 June 2002)
Video screening: ONE work of 4 to 6 mins
Semi-Final Stage: ONE Classical sonata movement of 4 to 6 mins
Final Stage: ONE or more free choice work(s) of 6 to 10 mins not performed in Semi-Final stage
Advanced Duet
till 18 years old (Participants born after 1 June 2002)
Video screening: ONE work of 4 to 6 mins
Final Stage: ONE works of 6 to 10 mins
Professional Solo
No age limit (Participants born before 1 June 2005)
Video screening: ONE work of 5 to 8 mins
Semi-Final Stage: ONE Classical sonata movement and ONE free choice Etude or Virtuosic work of total 10 to 15 mins
Final Stage: ONE or more free choice works of 10 to 15 mins not performed in Semi-Final stage
Professional Two-Piano Duo
No age limit (Participants born before 1 June 2005)
Video screening: ONE work of 5 to 8 mins
Final Stage: ONE work of 8 to 12 mins
3. VIDEO SCREENING or LIVE AUDITIONS Upon registration, all applicants must submit a recent (not more than 6 months) video for screening filmed with the participant’s face and hands in the frame at all times by the deadline of 1 May 2020
The videos submitted can be in the form of a Youtube file or MPV format.
Successful applicants will be informed within 2 weeks of their received submission, to participate in the live competiton in June.
Participants who do not wish to submit a video may choose to register and play for a Live Audition in Singapore on 17th June 2020. The fee is SGD$100.
4. CHOICE OF WORKS
All applicants are permitted to re-use the piece played in the video screening stage
Alternatively, all applicants may choose to present a new programme subject to the duration requirements stated above.
ONE Classical sonata movement refers to a movement composed by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert.
An Etude refers to such a work composed by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Debussy or any composer of the 20th century.
7. ADJUDICATION
The panel of judges reserves the right to stop a competitor's performance during the live performance rounds of the competition if the time limit is exceeded.
The panel will utilise a marking system. Competitors in the Advanced and Professional categories who obtained a minimum of 85 marks will advance to the Final stage.
The panel reserves the right to award, and not award any prizes as they deem fit.
The panel’s decision is final and no discussion or correspondence will be entertained.
